The Burning Question #30 is now out

Hi, after way too long a silence (and the tragic death of Carrie Fisher) issue thirty is finally out!

In this newsletter you'll find articles about Atlantis, one of the oldest active sims on the site, as well as Of Knights of Blood and Steel, one of the newer sims.

Silent Hunter has once again contributed an outstanding background article, this time on the Tupolev Tu-22 'Backfire' bomber.

Issue #29 of The Burning Question released

After a long break and a change of editor, the latest edition of the Phoenix newsletter is ought, including the latest news and a feature on the Canadian space series Dark Matter. The newsletter can be viewed here:

mlb38, a relatively new player to the site (she joined in August last year) has been appointed as the new editor of The Burning Question following Mischa Brendel's departure from the site.

While it is yet to be confirmed when any next issue will appear, it should not be too long before it is released; regular contributor Silent Hunter has a number of articles already submitted that would be available to form a featured article.

Issue #27 of The Burning Question released!

With so much delay to the November issue of The Burning Question, I decided to put the November and December issue together and the result is now finished.

You had to wait longer, but there are no less than three background stories in this issue. Silent Hunter has reviewed Spectre and I myself have reviewed the latest Star Wars movie. And last, but certainly not least, an in-character interview, written by Misty Diamond. Hopefully the first of many more.

These have been and still are hectic times for several Phoenix members; both on the forums as in real life. At times like that it is important to remember that we are a community, which Misty Wilson points out in her GC’s comments, and which is also one of the themes that made Firefly such a great show, I argue in this month’s background story.

The Burning Question #23 released

Aaah, real life. That annoying interruption to you fleeing a Balrog, assaulting a space station, making a pass at a spunky elf or discussing terms for setting down your space ship.

What can you do? I don’t know about all of you, but I for starters could make some more work of getting the newsletter team which I have been talking about set up and that is exactly what I plan to do, so that real life can try all it wants but the newsletter will (hardly) be affected by it.

I think the current date on which the newsletter has been published and the fact that it is a two-monthly issue makes it painfully clear that this is at the moment far from being the actual case and truth be told the newsletter team will probably still be a work in progress when it is time for the next newsletter. But we’ll get there eventually.

I would also like to thank Silent Hunter, who always has been and continues to be a major contributor to the newsletter. If it weren’t for him, then most of the time The Burning Question wouldn’t have a background story to publish.

So all that it left to me for now is to tell you to enjoy reading the latest issue of The Burning Question:

Although the August issue of The Burning Question comes at the last day of September, this will not be a double issue. Behind the scenes we are already working on the next issue. But there's no denying that this issue is indeed rather late in appearing. There are several reasons for that, but there is little use going into them. Regretfully there is no Artist's Corner in this issue, but fear not: this doesn't mean that this section has been cancelled and the next issue should again have a page filled with the art of one of our members.

From the newsletter: Writing Challenges

Deborah Leighton Plom has started writing challenges for players of Firefly sims. The challenge is to write a story of up to 400 words in which play-ers expand on characters in various ways.

The posts (which are not in-game) are posted on a separate forum thread and are supposed to give insight in the back-ground of players’ characters. They are also a possible re-source for GMs to use as a reference when writing storylines for those particular characters.

The first writing challenge is set on Unification Day roughly two years ago from the date most of our Firefly sims are currently taking place on.

So far, four players have posted a story. The stories are about a doctor working in a hospital on Londinium, a secu-rity officer working in a burlesque club on Greenleaf Skyplex, a man in the resort city of Rishi on one of Ariel’s moons which seems to have a mysterious connection to the Londinium doctor, and an Alliance officer who is commanded to report to his superiors at once.

Leighton Plom posted on Facebook, asking whether people would be interested in writing challenges. The positive feedback was enough for her to put the idea into practice. (mb)
